This rather uncommon bolete is one of the most distinctive Xerocomus species, even if it may be easily overlooked due to its superficial resemblance to other macroscopically similar taxa, in particular X. chrysenteron and X. rubellus (brown forms). A good hint to identify it is the stipe which discolours to grey in the lower part. The cap is often crackled in age, and in this case it is possible to observe in the fissures a white to yellowish context (inset), devoid of the typical red layer which you can observe in X. chrysenteron. The majority of the spores of X. porosporus show a truncate apex, and this is the character which allows to readily identify this taxon under the microscope. (m.f.) |
