Leccinum piceinum |

|
This is one of the members of sect. Leccinum, which are usually characterised by cap colours variable from orange to red and by a flesh which turns intensely redddish, purple and finally greyish. Moreover, the cap cuticle of the species of sect. Leccinum is often excedent. L. piceinum belongs to the L. quercinum-complex, where we find several very close species bound to various trees (L. quercinum s. str., L. vulpinum, L. piceinum, L. populinum...); the species illustrated here - rather common under Picea abies - is characterised by dark reddish cap colours, reaching even distinctly brown tinges. The stipe is decorated, as for the majority of Leccinum species, by evident dark squamules. (m.f.) |
