Agrocybe praecox
(Pers.) Fayod

The genus Agrocybe comprehends brown-spored agarics characterized by a hymeniform pileipellis, usually of medium size, with or without a ring on the stipe; they are closely related to the genera Conocybe and Pholiotina, and the smaller Agrocybe species are easily confused with some Conocybe. Agrocybe praecox is a very common species, growing both in the wild and in garden or parks, often among bark in flower beds. Its flesh has an agreeable mealy smell, and at the base of the stipe it is often possible to observe white myceliar rhizoids. It may be consumed, but it is not a very good mushroom. (m.f.)
