Russula aurea

Pers.

Russula aurea is surely one of the more striking Russulae, due to its mixture of bright golden yellow, orange and red colours. When these colours are evident, it may be easily recognised in the field; another interesting and almost unique feature of this species is the lemon yellow colour which can be observed on the gill edge and on the surface of the stipe. However, forms entirely devoid of the yellow pigment may occurr (fo. axantha Romagn.) and such specimens become an anonymous red Russula, which is not easy to recognise without the aid of the microscope. R. aurea is a good edible fungus. (m.f.)
