Mauro is certainly the best known European Russula expert nowadays: the publication of the two volumes of his monumental "Monografia del Genere Russula in Europa" has been welcome with much enthusiasm by everyone interested in this difficult genus.

A medical doctor, Mauro started working on Russulas nearly twenty years ago and has published a long series of contributions to the study of the Mediterranean species, describing nearly thirty new taxa from Italy.
