Environmental cooperation

The activities in Tanzania are focused in the Udzungwa Mountains and include the management of the Udzungwa Ecological Monitoring Centre a station founded in 2006, annexed to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, created and managed by the Museum in partnership with the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA). Since 2007, the UEMC has been conducting an environmental education programme that has initially involved five primary schools.

It also provides constant technical support to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, it implements monitoring programmes (including the TEAM project, see above), it provides accommodation and support to researchers and students, including the possibility to conduct training courses in a 24-bed hostel opened in early 2010. Since its establishment, the UEMC has contributed to make the Udzungwa Mountains an area of international importance for biodiversity conservation.

Some of the activities are carried out with the collaboration and support of the Association Mazingira ("environment" in Swahili), established in 2010 within MTSN. The Association is a working group born to strengthen and diversify the activities of the solidarity sector and to promote environmental cooperation at local and national level.
