Brief History
The Section of Tropical Biodiversity was established in 2008 to consolidate activities that were initiated in the late 1990s in terms of research explorations of biodiversity-rich forests in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania and were subsequently structured, since 2004, into an integrated research and conservation programme initially focussed in the Udzungwa Mountains, the southernmost block of the Eastern Arc.

Why Tropical Biodiversity in the Museum of Natural Sciences of Trento?

  1. Because tropical forests are the richest, less known and most threatened biome of the planet and we all - in the era of globalization - share the responsibility to pass it intact to future generations.
  2. Because we believe it is important to carry out the mission of the modern Museums to facilitate the dialogue between nature, science and society especially in those countries where there is a lack of resources and institutions that can facilitate this process.
  3. Because we believe that a better awareness about the nature and practices of land use in the countries where we operate (environmental cooperation) is one of the strategic, yet neglected, sectors of the socio-economic development of a country.
  4. Because contributing to the scientific knowledge and environmental awareness is critical element of the cultural development of any community.
