Monitoring biodiversity

Thanks to the long-term presence in the target areas, especially the Udzungwa Mountains, biological monitoring has become an important sector of activities. Francesco Rovero joined in 2002 an existing primate monitoring programme (representing today the longest data-set on the area) that was consolidated and expanded by the Udzungwa Ecological Monitoring Centre.

In 2008, the Udzungwa became the first site in Africa of the Tropical Ecology, Assessment and Monitoring (TEAM) network, currently including 18 sites throughout the tropics. TEAM mission is to generate standardized, real-time data for monitoring long term trends in tropical biodiversity through a global network of field stations, providing an early warning system on the status of biodiversity to effectively guide conservation action.
