Boletus torosus

Fr.

B. torosus has been interpreted in many different ways, since the original description by Fries, who had never seen fresh specimens of this fungus, is quite vague. According to the interpretation of the Swiss school B. torosus is a bolete with clearly yellow pores and stipe, which may become blood red only in old specimens. The cap, only initially yellow, turns greenish-grey, and when old may have very diverse colours, also cream, orange or reddish; in this stage it is almost impossible to distinguish from B. rhodopurpureus. The stipe carries a fine reticulate ornamentation and the flesh turns very intensely and quickly deep ink blue. It grows in warm and calcareous forests, mainly under oak and beech. (g.s.)
