Lyophyllum littoralis

(Ballero & Contu) Contu

One of the many species described in recent years by Sardinian mycologist Marco Contu, Lyophyllum littoralis is a striking species belonging in sect. Difformia. The darker spots on the cap cuticle, often in circles, and the growth in clusters in sandy soil help to recognize it. A good lookalike of Lyophyllum littoralis is Rhodocybe malenconii, growing in the same habitats and exhibiting similar habit and colours. The spore print of the latter species, however, is more or less pinkish, not white. (m.f.)
